A hot water coil lets your boiler heat your home through ductwork. It’s a smart way to get forced air heat without a separate furnace, especially in homes that already have a boiler and ducts for central air. Because one boiler can supply your heating coil, your baseboard or radiant zones and your hot water, you get an efficient, all-in-one system. HCS Heating & Cooling brings hydronic and ductwork expertise together, so every part works as one.
Your boiler heats water, and a circulator pump sends it to a coil inside the air handler. The air handler’s blower pushes air across the hot coil and through your ductwork to every room. The cooled water returns to the boiler to be reheated. In summer, the same air handler and ductwork can deliver central air conditioning.
A hot water coil is a great fit if:
Heat your ducted zones, baseboard or radiant, and your hot water from a single efficient boiler.
Forced air brings rooms up to temperature quickly.
Pair it with a high-efficiency boiler (up to 97% AFUE) for low operating costs.
The same air handler and ductwork deliver central A/C in summer.
No furnace burner and no separate heat exchanger to maintain in the air handler.

Cool or lukewarm air from the vents when the heat is on
Blower runs but the house doesn't warm up
Water dripping or pooling at the air handler
Gurgling or rushing water sounds near the coil
Some rooms warm while ducted areas stay cold
Boiler runs constantly or short-cycles when the coil zone calls for heat

Hot water coils in attics, crawl spaces or garages can freeze and burst in extreme cold, especially if the power or boiler goes out. We can add freeze protection, such as low-temperature controls or a glycol mix, to protect your coil and your home. Ask us during your next service visit.

Here are answers to the questions New Jersey homeowners ask us most. Need something else? Just give us a call — we’re happy to help.
Often, yes.
We’ll check whether your boiler has enough capacity for the added load and whether your ductwork and air handler can support a coil.
Yes.
When the coil and boiler are sized correctly, a hot water coil delivers comfortable, steady warm air comparable to a furnace.
Yes.
The air handler that holds the heating coil can also hold an A/C coil, so one set of ductwork delivers heating and cooling.
With regular maintenance and good water quality, a hot water coil can last 15 to 20 years or more.
